When you light a cigarette you inhale smoke into your lungs, and the nicotine is absorbed into the body through the soft tissue. The vapor of an e-cigarette is not drawn so deeply into the body and therefore the nicotine is taken in through the cheeks instead. You absorb less of the nicotine, which can make them initially less satisfying for some heavy smokers.

Since electronic cigarettes produce vapor rather than smoke, their users are more typically called “vapers” rather than “smokers”. You may also come across the term “vaping”, which simply refers to the act of using an e-cigarette.

Are E-Cigarettes Dangerous?

A lot of people worry that e-cigarettes are no less dangerous than regular cigarettes, since they still contain nicotine. However, this worry is normally down to an incorrect assumption that nicotine is toxic. Although nicotine is very addictive there are few associated health problems – it is actually the tobacco in regular cigarettes which triggers serious disease.
