True Super Fast Broadband is Coming
Fibre Optics Comes to London
According to BT, nearly 90 percent of homes and businesses in London will be able to accommodate fibre optic Broadband Internet by 2011 in the spring.
It was already planned to enable fibre optic Internet to more than sixty percent of homes in the United Kingdom in the year 2015. According to the telco, the prerequisite was “an acceptable environment for investment..
In addition, upwards of 90 percent of the businesses and homes in the Greater London area are enabled for advanced copper Internet at speeds up to and including 20 Mb per second. BT anticipates the availability of this Internet to expand.
Fibre optic Internet is even faster than advanced copper, providing service anywhere from 40 Mb per second to 100 Mb per second. Speeds vary with the service that is used.
From the plans laid out by BT, there will be over 100 exchanges in London that will be enabled with these ultra-speedy connections in the spring of next year. BT estimates that about 500,000 buildings in the city will be upgraded with this services by the end of the summer.
BT’s department in charge of providing fibre optics, known as Openreach, is offering the service on wholesale to every provider that currently offers high-speed Internet.
London’s awkward Mayor Boris Johnson indicated that the upgrade to higher Internet speeds will coincide perfectly with the arrival of the Olympic Summer Games in 2012. The upgrade will allow viewers to watch the Games at the highest speed possible.
He went on to further talk about Tim Berners-Lee, a native of London and Internet originator. It would be fitting, he indicated, given the man’s legacy to provide Londoners with the fastest Games online ever. Ian Livingston of BT stated that the upgrade to fibre optics will give London residents access to these higher speeds and to the advanced copper Internet services long before the Olympics come to the city. He further elaborated that the network BT is establishing will ensure that high-definition viewing of the Games will be available, and will also allow for viewers to use interactive features to further enjoy the event. This new infrastructure will also help the city to thrive and for its residents to enjoy all of the economic benefits of this new technology.
