There are trains connecting both airports to Paddington Station in downtown London. You can pre-purchase the tickets or pick them up from a machine as you arrive. Gatwick express runs around Heathrow is alittle less.
Its a nice above ground ride so you can see the countryside and the city. The train is safe and there is plenty of room for baggage.

Question by Jall K: Am I going to encounter any problems carrying a Volcano Vaporizer through London and European airports?
The product is sold in both UK and Europe, and I will be ensuring it is very clean. Carry-on or checked?

Since it looks like a land mine, you’ll definitely not want to be around when they find it, so checked in luggage would be best.
You still have to go through customs, and immigration with it so there’s a lot of opportunities for trouble.
I don’t know the actual laws you’ll encounter, but going thru border security and customs is different than what you can get away with just outside the airport. They’re pretty serious these days.

First Person: Dad’s pocketknife causes security nightmare, hours-long wait for family
Growing up in an expatriate family meant a lot of layovers, delayed flights and general stalls in airports. But one month after the attacks on 9/11, my family had to spend one long and incredibly annoying night in Dallas-Fort Worth airport after my father was detained for having a pocket knife. Prior to the attacks, airport security never had an issue with his carrying a small utility knife, but …

Question by BS: Is there any decent 48 hrs parking sites outside London? – Other than the Airports?
Looking to spend a couple of days in London, but do not want to take my car into the city. I will be traveling up from the South and want somewhere secure to leave the car (for up to 48hrs), with good public transport links to the centre of London. I am thinking of using Gatwick Airport, but can anybody suggest an alternative?

If you want secure parking then the airport is your best bet. Purple parking (offsite) is one we use when we fly from Gatwick. They are ‘behind the wire’ and reasonably priced, especially if you book in advance. (£13.99 for 2 days) If you want to get into London, use the regular train rather than the Gatwick Express as it is much cheaper! Have a great trip!
